China has warned the United States to refrain from "discriminatory actions" aimed at its companies, in light of reports that the US is contemplating a ban on vehicles that use Chinese and Russian technology.
Media outlets, including Bloomberg, reported on Sunday that the US government is contemplating new regulations that would prohibit the use of hardware and software from China in American vehicles.
In response, foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian emphasized the need for the US to uphold market principles, advocating for an open, fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese businesses.
"China strongly opposes the US's expansion of the national security concept to justify discriminatory measures against Chinese firms and products," Lin stated, asserting that China will firmly protect its legitimate rights and interests.
Should these new rules be implemented, they would represent a significant escalation in the ongoing trade tensions between the US and China.
In May, the US introduced substantial tariff increases on a range of Chinese imports, including electric vehicles and semiconductors, amounting to $18 billion. The White House highlighted that these tariffs target critical sectors such as EVs, batteries, essential minerals, and medical supplies.
Under the new measures, the tariff on electric vehicles is set to increase to 100% this year, while the tariff on semiconductors is projected to rise from 25% to 50% by next year.
